The last few years have provided unprecedented challenges as well as opportunities for technologies. Demand for innovation has exponentially increased challenging many industries. Moving forward, technology leaders are asked to embrace more uncertainty and manage more risk, while leveraging additional technology to provide more efficient operations. All while, we face uncertain supply chains, worker burn out, and overall resource shortfalls.

Mr. McGuthry will guide us through a discussion of the current challenges, risks and future visions of technology using some of his core operating principles:

John McGuthry

Vice President / Chief Information Officer
Cal Poly Pomona

John McGuthry currently leads the Information Technology & Institutional Planning Division at Cal Poly Pomona. The division is comprised of six units: the Office of the CIO; Information Technology unit; IT Security & Compliance unit, Process & Project Management unit; Learning & Research Technologies unit, and the newest unit Institutional Research, Planning, & Analytics.

Mr. McGuthry joined Cal Poly Pomona in July 2011 as the University’s Chief Information Officer. He has over 35 years of experience in the field of technology and over 18 years as a Chief Information Officer in higher education. Prior to serving as a CIO, Mr. McGuthry led business process consulting at Telcordia Technologies and led internet services product management teams at Sprint and BellSouth. John started his career supporting meteorology researchers at the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center and later transitioned to the Mitre Corporation supporting research for both NASA and the Department of Defense.

Mr. McGuthry earned his Master of Science in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Sciences from the University of Maryland at College Park. He is also an active participant in the technology community in Southern California, Educause, and the CIO Executive Council.
